One-on-one Counselling with Mike

Mike Schmalz

(pro-nouns he/him)

MA, CCC, Group Facilitator

My Background:

Mike is a Prairie transplant, born and raised on Treaty 4 Land in Saskatchewan. He moved to the Island in 2013 to do his professional schooling. He is grateful for the opportunity to live, work, and play on these unceded lands of the Songhees, WSÁNEĆ, and Esquimalt Nations.

Mike conducted his practicum with the Men’s Trauma Centre, graduated from the University of Victoria with a Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology in 2015, and has worked with us since 2016. He is a member in good standing with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association as a Certified Canadian Counsellour and is registered with the BC Crime Victim Assistance Program so that he is able to provide counselling for victims of crimes.

My Approach:

Mike has a warm presence and believes in the resiliency of his clients. He’s an eclectic practitioner who works from a relational and person-centred approach with training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, informed by current Somatic Therapy practices. Mike enjoys helping clients gain more insight and awareness as well as the patterns that play out in people’s lives to help develop a person’s sense of control in life. He has worked extensively with diverse populations and is comfortable navigating issues related to trauma, ethnicity, gender, sexual identification, socioeconomic status, and spirituality.
